Where did the Resolution idea come from?
Being somewhat of an afficionado for all things vintage and retro, and having a penchant for clothing and shopping (especially combining the two), I decided it was time to take advantage of the fact that I currently live in a city full of vintage and second-hand clothing stores. This not only supports local, small businesses, but will also cut down on the amount of clothing I buy in a year (well, hopefully) and is a more economical and environmentally friendly choice. It will also help me move away from getting caught up in our disposable, consumerist culture by making me really think about what I'm buying and its impact on society as a whole. We buy and discard cheap clothing by the masses, which eventually end up in landfills or shipped to third world countries. Large corporate fashion-retailers control the market and they way we shop - and think about shopping, with very little regard to ethics and global responsibility. We need only look at what's happening in the garment industry in Bangladesh to realize that the current model of clothing manufacturing is not sustainable, nor is it ethical.
In hopes of curbing my spending and also doing something good for the environment, the community and humanity (even if it's just small), I can perhaps inspire others to do the same. And obviously, look fabulous while doing so.
Where will you shop?
Although Toronto drives me absolutely nuts sometimes, it is a wonderful city for vintage and second-hand stores. There are shops all along Queen St. West and Kensington Market, as well as in my own neighbourhood of Riverside/Leslieville that specialize in vintage fashions and second hand goods. I can't wait to explore all of them!
What about underwear?
I draw a line at lingerie - don't get me wrong, I know you can find vintage brassieres, but for any underwear/socks/bras/hosiery I need, I'll be popping into the Bay.
Are you crazy?
Yes. Next question.
Aren't you scared of bedbugs?
Terrified! This city is crawling with them. I read somewhere that dry cleaning kills 100% of all bugs, eggs etc. So does throwing everything in the dryer on med-high heat for 20 minutes. Suffice to say, everything I bring home will go straight into the dryer or to the cleaners.
